It's week nine of working in my raised bed garden. It's looking a lot fuller since I started it! As you can see, I've been slowly adding sections.
It's so exciting to see things growing!
The zinnias are *this close* to blooming!
The basil has gotten so big and fragrant.
We also have green beens....
And squash, among other things!
Even more fun that watching the plants grow is actually getting to harvest and eat them.
These are scallions. Not only had I never grown them before, I'd never even eaten them! They are a lot like onions. And the entire green top can be chopped up and used as an herb, kind of like chives. They are great in a baked chicken crust!
These are the tops of just three scallions! What we haven't used are chopped and in the freezer.
The lettuce has probably been our most sucessful crop.
We've been eating our lettuce crop for a month. When you snip off the big leaves, they regenerate bigger than ever! The best part is that we started harvesting it less than six weeks after planting. How's that for a fast turnaround?
Anyone else having fun in the garden?
Your garden looks AMAZING already! I have raised beds as well, but nothing in them yet. After seven years, they need more DIRT than anything at the moment!
ReplyDeleteyumm...we're not even close to blooming here in Ontario...:( enjoy your fresh veggies...xo

Wow...I forget where you live, but we're a long way off from blooming...even in Kentucky! Your garden looks really nice & can't wait to hear how everything tastes. We've had 10+ inches of rain and my garden is a MESS. The little seedlings just can't get going in standing water. Oh well, I guess everyone here is in the same boat. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteHow great to have a garden. I've tried but other than peppers don't seem to have much luck. Unfortunately my tomatoes always get bottom rot. :( Your zinnias will be beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYour garden is doing so well Kelly! It must be so nice to enjoy a meal fresh from your garden.
ReplyDeleteWe have the wood, have to get it put together and then plant! So excited to do this...yours looks AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteEverything that you've grown looks so wonderful. You must have a green thumb!
ReplyDeleteYour garden is looking wonderful, Kelly! Like some of the other women who commented, we haven't even started our garden here (northern IL) yet. Soon though - it's finally starting to warm up a bit!
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that the green onions are shallots. Shallots are in a bulb and clove form, like garlic. What you show in the picture looks like scallions (or, simply green onions). Just FYI! :-)
Everything looks so delicious - there is nothing like fresh veggies from your own garden. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteHey Kelly! Your garden is looking fantastic...can't wait to get mine out. Kentucky has been one big rain storm for WEEKS! I haven't even been able to till my soil yet. (but then again, we don't normally get to plant until May anyway, so I'm still not late) :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for you comments on my laundry room..it's turning out SO cute...can't wait to keep showing it off! :) (and you'll be VERY surprised by the color!) lol
Have a great day!
Missy
Loving your raised beds, I can't wait till I am able to plant a pot of Tiny Tomatoes on the Deck, but still a week or 2 away from the threat of Frost ~ Brrrr, it is still cold here in Michigan!
ReplyDeleteHi Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI posted about your blog and store here :http://raggygirlvintage.blogspot.com/2011/04/great-news-still-time-to-sign-up.html
I am envious of your veggie garden, am waiting for it to warm up enough here in the north!!
Tracey
